Alaska’s largest city has long been a hub for adventure, but many people only think of it as a summer destination. T&Cers will tell you that’s not the case.
Members of our Anchorage team recently attended the Visit Anchorage Winter Frontline Trade Show and got the inside scoop about new operators and experiences to choose from this winter. Here are three new options:
1. The new tour operator, Alaska Trail Guides, is offering guided fat bike tours around Anchorage, as well as in Chugach State Park and Girdwood. Tours include trips to breweries and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, as well as evening adventures available for northern lights viewing and stargazing.
2. Salmon Berry Tours has a new, half-day eco tour that includes a guided winter hike in the area’s boreal forest. This local operator also offers a full-day tour with exclusive winter access to Hatcher Pass.
3. Alaska Backcountry Adventure Tours offers snowmachine tours throughout the winter, but they also now feature new enclosed and heated side-by-sides for shoulder season tours, which allows visitors to explore the backcountry all year.
After a day of adventuring in and around Anchorage, visitors can enjoy time at the Anchorage Museum, which just added 25,000 square feet of gallery space to display more of the permanent collection. Travelers can also spend time with Big Swig Tours for a multi-stop brewery tour, or its new option in 2018. The Alaska Crafted Tour includes stops for tastings at Girdwood Brewing, Anchorage Distillery and Double Shovel Cider Co.
